Brahma Chellaney on X: "Behind Trudeau’s ugly spat with India has been the Biden administration, which shared dubious intelligence with Ottawa, encouraging it to take on New Delhi. It is still extending support to Trudeau. But tellingly, no evidence of any kind has been released to back the allegations. https://t.co/43P88sCWAN" / X (twitter.com)

How India has demoted Canada to naya Pakistan (msn.com)

Time Line

  • June 18, 2023: Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, is shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb with a large Sikh population. He was a Canadian citizen campaigning for the creation of an independent Sikh homeland carved out of India. Nijjar has been designated as a terrorist by the Indian government. Sept. 1, 2023: A Canadian trade official says Canada paused talks on a proposed trade treaty with India, an unexpected move that came about three months after both countries said they planned to seal an initial pact in 2023.

Sept. 10, 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveys strong concerns about Sikh separatist protests in Canada to Prime Minister Trudeau on the sidelines of a G20 summit in New Delhi.

Sept. 18, 2023: Trudeau tells parliament that Canada was "actively pursuing credible allegations" linking Indian government agents to Nijjar's killing.

Sept. 19, 2023: India dismisses Trudeau's allegations as "absurd." Each country expels a diplomat in tit-for-tat moves.

Sept. 22, 2023: India suspends issuing new visas for Canadians and asks Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in India. India, however, resumed issuing visas two months later.

Oct. 19, 2023: Canada has withdrawn 41 diplomats from India amid a dispute over Nijjar's murder, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said.

Nov. 21, 2023: India's anti-terror agency files a case against Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun stating that he warned Air India passengers in video messages shared on social media that their lives were in danger.

Nov. 22, 2023: A senior Biden administration official says U.S. authorities thwarted a plot to kill Pannun in the United States.

April 30, 2024: The White House describes as a serious matter a Washington Post report that an officer in India's intelligence service was directly involved in both Nijjar's killing and the foiled plot to kill Pannun in the U.S. India's foreign ministry said the report contained "unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations."

May 3, 2024: Canadian police charge four people for allegedly being linked to Nijjar's murder. Karan Brar (22), Kamalpreet Singh (22), Amardeep Singh (22) and 28-year-old Karanpreet Singh are arrested for their alleged role in Nijjar murder.

Aug. 27, 2024: Canadian police warn Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, an aide to Nijjar, of an increased threat to his life, a prominent Sikh separatist says.

  • Canada-India row boosts Modi, Trudeau short-term (msn.com)  "Canada is home to the highest population of Sikhs outside their home state of Punjab, or about 2% of Canada's population. Demonstrations in recent years to carve a separate homeland have irked India's government, which regularly accuses Canada of harboring separatists." Economic Times dated 16 October 2024. Canada - India row benefits politically both Trudeau and Modi. Trudeau shall take a stand that no country can harm Canadian citizen in Canada and Modi shall declare Canada as terrorist state supporting criminals known as terrorists in India. Modi shall prove that India is strong now under his leadership and will not bend against West pressure. Moreover over it may force India to be closer to Russia and China, though the West uses all political instruments to destabilize unfriendly states. Examples are many to prove.
  • What actions can India take if Canada imposes sanctions? Shiv Aroor explains (msn.com)
  • Nearly a quarter million Indian students currently study in Canada. If India were to pull the plug and bar Indian students from studying in Canada, it would have a devastating impact. It could paralyse Canada's education financial system, into which billions in Indian fees actually go.
  • India can cancel all Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards of Canadian citizens of Indian origin who are sympathetic to pro-Khalistan elements, a step that would force many to reconsider their involvement.

  •  Another potential measure involves suspending property rights for Khalistani supporters, delaying new visas, and increasing scrutiny. This could pressure supporters of the movement to reconsider their stance.

Additionally, India can freeze Canadian financial institutions and pension funds with investments in India. While unlikely, it remains a possibility as tensions escalate.

  • India could impose trade sanctions, just like Canada is considering against New Delhi. As a top-10 trading partner, India could significantly harm Canada's economy, which already faces a trade imbalance in India's favour.

  • India may also suspend multiple-entry visas for suspected Canadian citizens of Indian descent, which could spark a backlash within the Canadian Indian community, possibly impacting domestic politics in Canada.

  • “We have no faith in the current Canadian government's commitment to ensure their security. Therefore, the Government of India has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials. It was also conveyed that India reserves the right to take further steps in response to the Trudeau government’s support for extremism, violence and separatism against India,” it stated. • Leaders' Personal interests in wooing voters can cause conflict in International Relations. India is a great vibrant multi-cultural, multi-lingual, multi-regional democracy with one-fifth of the world population. India could maintain democracy and develop. Hunger, illiteracy, and poverty existed before 1947 could be countered by democratic means. The policies of Indian leaders helped to remain democratic.

  • Jawahar Lal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, and now @narendramodi  and @BJP4India  are helping India to progress and be self-reliant in scientific knowledge, technology and social sciences. This shall enrich culture and pave the way for the New World Order, which advocates a Unipolar World with strong multipolar regions.
  • Canada and other political and capital elites of rich countries must cooperate with the Indian capital to grow and serve humanity. I agree that Indian legislatures, executives, and judiciary need improvement in implementing the right welfare decisions and providing the best housing, industrial, agricultural, and transport infrastructure. But Canadian leaders must also learn that terrorism does not know boundaries. Criminals are capable of traveling around the world and transferring funds to destabilize other states. Canada should not use these terrorists and criminals to destabilize India. Canada must hand over these criminals to India to maintain good relations with one-fifth of the world population. The world is changing faster than many leaders are able to conceptualize the reality at the grassroots political will of the people. The hatred and selfishness of leaders are to be curtailed. Democracy is the means to coexist even with different opinions. Criminals want violence, which should be nipped in the bud before again one airplane explodes. Terrorism is not acceptable, though some leaders may use it to subdue rivals. @JustinTrudeau @DrSJaishankar @narendramodi @HMOIndia @MEAIndia

There's a strong presence there of Khalistanis, who have publicly glorified Indira Gandhi's assassination.
