Hindu Nationalism and the Rise of Ethnic Democracy

ANI News on Twitter - "Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath says, "Attempts are being made to point fingers at the Sanatan culture. Attempts are being made to insult our heritage. But they forgot 'Jo Sanatan nahi mita tha Ravan ke ahankaar se, Jo Sanatan nahi diga tha Kans ke ahankaar se, Jo Sanatan nahi mita tha Babar aur Aurangzeb ke atyachar se vo Sanatan in satta parjeevi se kya mit payega'. Harsh Gupta Madhusudan and Shashi Tharoor discuss in detail Dharmtva / Hindutva / Moditva. India is continuously improving and reforming laws. There are many long-term gains. Both agree on Uniform Civil Code. India is democratic and India shall be a country to live in within 20 years. India has improved on many fronts.
Roads are not good between Mumbai and Bangalore and are with potholes. It needs improvement. Harsh talked well. I appreciate. Tharoor did not want toxicity in the society (Muslim relationship in India). Harsh quotes Sarvpalli Radha Krishna. Dharam on FraternityHinduism is a commonwealth of religions (41:30). Hindutva of the Modi era can not be compared with Hindutva of Radhakrishna's Hindutva.
Harsh is arguing well with Tharoor. I appreciate both. Listen at least after 30:00 onwards.

21 May 2022   Gyanvapi Masjid Case

History is more than Hindu-Muslim Conflicts: Expert on Historical Issues Being Politicised today.

Gyanvapi Masjid case: Will History end up dividing India or end up unifying the nation. Professor Makhan Lal Historian says that historians should talk about facts. Facts should not be distorted. Swapan Das Gupta said that there was a constant denial mode that if you talk about the structure of history there will be problems. Muslims will not be demonized with this, provided they learn to live with the history and learn to live with the past. As long as you do not accept your past all these things shall be happening. Muslims should own the good and bad things of history. Prof Imran Habib confirms that whatever is being discussed is already in the books. Claims are being made as if it is happening for the first time. This is the politics of the BJP. "Do not look at history as a conflict between Hindus and Muslims" this is what we are questioning, said Irfan Khan.

Modi visits Denmark.
PM Narender Modi addresses community reception in Copenhagen, Denmark on 3 May 2022. Danish Prime Minister graced the occasion.
Indians belonging to different parts of India were present in the reception with their dresses. Modi thanked Telugus, Maharathies, Bangalies, Malayalees, Tamils, Kannadas, Udiyas, and Punjabis. Modi adds that this is what is the strength of India and talked about inclusiveness in cultural diversity. He said, "भाषा अनेक लेकिन भाव एक" is the strength of India. Modi repeated his philosophy again "सबका साथ, सबका विकास सबका विशवास, सबका प्रयास" (efforts of altogether to achieve goals of prosperity for India). He stressed further that this will not only remove the poverty of India but shall improve the prosperity of the people of the world, for a one-fifth population of the world's population live in India.
While appreciating the Indian diaspora of Denmark Modi stressed that it is the Indian culture that Indians respect rules and law of the land and democracy where ever they reside and contribute to the progress of the country where they work and live. It is confirmed by many political leaders of different countries to Narender Modi (7:04). Indians are making a positive contribution to Danish society.
Modi is in Denmark and attending the meeting on the environment. He quoted to save the environment, since centuries Indian culture sees Paramatma in trees and treats the river as a mother goddess. He is of the opinion that the world should change its lifestyle for the environment. The consumption approach and use-and-throw approach should not be followed.
He empowered the Indian diaspora that you are not Ambassadors of government (राज दूत) but are ambassadors of the nation (राष्ट्र दूत). As the nation's ambassador convince five nonindians to visit India and take cognizance of Indian Vedic culture. The concept of one world family is far above the concept of trade propagated by neoliberalism.
Thobani examines critically Modi's visits in other foreign countries and writes that "Hindu nationalism reflects the conservative ideology of Hindutva (Hinduness), grounded in notions of Hindu supremacy wherein the religious and cultural identity of the Indian nation are regarded as fundamentally one and the same(Thobani 2019, 747)." Thobani concludes that the "Hindutva movement is increasingly global in scope and Hindus engage in multiple nationalism near and far (Thobani 2019, 760). http://doi.org/10.1080/01419870.2018.1468567

Pradeep Gupta is a master of the celebrations of polling results. Pradeep Gupta went into detail about each constituency and analyzed the effects of polling. He predicted BJP sweep in Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Uttarakhand. Gupta also confirmed that AAP shall sweep Punjab.
The needs of the people, what strives them to decide whom to vote on is the main factor in decision making by voters. Mr. Gupta understood the correct conditions of the people and communicated to concerned people.
How do the challenges emerge? And how the incumbents adjust and perform is paramount important.
Pradeep Gupta analyzed region by region and seat by seat voting pattern. Gupta translated the percentage of share to the seats gained by the political parties. Mr. Gupta shall be delivering lectures to academic institutes on how he could predict with 93% accuracy, as informed by India Today.
These results confirm that Narender Bhai Modi changed the rules of the political movement. Those who changed gained in politics, but those who did not change with time went to the margins of the margin of the political spectrum. It is true for politicians, secularists, NGOs, and media persons.

'Even after incumbency, our vote share increased in Manipur, UP & Goa': PM says BJP scripted history - Republic. BJP vote share increased in all states. After ruling 10 years again BJP came to power. In UP and Uttarakhand people voted again BJP. BJP got blessings from north, west, east, and west. Each state has different problems, but these people are uniting for BJP's poor proactive performance appreciated by people. Poor were not getting benefits earlier, but now good governance and delivery gave benefits to the people. We improved governance delivery and added transparency in the complete system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK0GcFOBu0Y

Another thing was noticed in these results today. And that is Pro Incumbency Wave. Till now, only Anti Incumbency Wave i.e. anti-government wave was discussed on news channels in elections. But today's results showed that there can be a great wave in support of the government and the party as well. In the four states where the BJP had governments, it got such a big victory because of this Pro Incumbency Wave.
Bulldozer has become symbol of uprooting mafias and criminals.
Uttar Pradesh: election results constituency-wise: https://www.oneindia.com/uttar-pradesh-assembly-election.../ UP results indicate that polarization of votes took place but not that much what SP expected. 2014, 2017, 2019, 2022shows caste, mafiocracy, criminal patronage, most mafia people have lost, many caste people lost their elections proving that democracy is deep rooting now in India.
Where are those people who were talking about doomsday for BJP? Saba Naqvi said that educated Dalits decided that they shall not vote for BJP. Media lost objectivity in the reading of this elections democracy. If people are transcending caste barriers and If people are moving on the road of development, if the country is changing, then some are still biased to BJP. Why? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_sNyMglWmQ Ravi Shankar Prasad on Republic World. If you play on caste, then you perish.
It was a pro incumbency wave but not an anti-incumbency wave. English proverb In India do not cast their votes but vote their caste. Earlier it was Muslim plus Yadav.  What is nationalism and for what it is? Why was it important in earlier years? Why has it lost its meaning? Should Hindu nationalism, Islamo nationalism, and Christian nationalism replace American, European, Asian, African, and Arabian nationalism?

We all are human beings and we need food, clothing, and shelter to live and create. We are social, political, and territorial, ... animals. We are emotional. We love, hate, feel proud, anger, greed, and grievance. Desires motivate us for good and evil. We subjugate to power. Power protects us. We devise territories and elect leaders, who are duty-bound to protect us and fulfill our needs for prosperity and happiness.

Leaders infuse nationalism soldiers and demand sacrifice to fight against the other leaders. The Westphalian system caused a lot of wars and humanity agreed to accept national boundaries to avoid war. "Nationalism  [is] to be a form of politics and, therefore. that political analysis provides the key to a general understanding." John Breuilly p. ix.

Recently I came across this letter written by Mohan J. Dutta, Professor Massey University and many reacted to his writing without understanding why did he write and what was his motive.
My first reaction: it is not possible. Something is wrong somewhere, but It encouraged me to study in detail, for I am convinced that Hindus are not like this.
Read Dutta's original letter about Hinduism dated 11 May 2021 https://carecca.nz/.../CARE_White_Paper_Issue_11_May_2021...
I read his biodata. Dutta is a very intelligent scholar. Dutta did not write his opinion but quoted books and publications published by many authors on this subject. In the last part, he suggests that cultural elements of Hindutva in Aotearoa (New Zealand in the Maori language) be closely examined and interrogated. Dutta further clarifies that it is vital in the backdrop of ongoing challenges of Islamophobia in New Zealand and globally. I do not see anything wrong in it. I agree with him that Hinduphobia should be examined in New Zealand to maintain harmony. My blessings to this young man for his intelligence and far-sightedness.
Writing by others
No sensible citizen/resident of a foreign nation of Hindu ethnicity can dare to act like this. Hindu ethnic residing in a foreign country can criticize Indian Hindu culture but can not dare to act against the interests of that country where Hindus migrated, for Hindus believe in Vasudhaive Kutumbkam (the world is one family) and Sarve Bhavantu Sukhaneh (all should be happy, healthy and prosper. (वसुधैव कुटुंबकम सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः).
India is united, for Hindus believe this ideology. Mahatma Gandhi (Gujarati Hindu) used this prayer knowing psychic of Hindus
रघुपति राघव राजा राम, पतितपावन सीता राम/
ईश्वर अल्लाह तेरो नाम, सबको सन्मति दे भगवन //
and did not appreciate the methods of violence to be adopted by Subhash Chander Bose (Bengali Hindu), though both were united against the British to get freedom. Gandhi insisted that the means to achieve freedom are as important as freedom.
What is Hindutva? How is it discussed in India and abroad? Does hatred exist in New Zealand between Hindu communities of the Indian diaspora? Is it real or artificial? If it is in New Zealand, then what about Europe, America, and Canada? It is quite interesting to do the research on Indian nationalism as a student at the University of Auckland who wants to resolve conflict around the world.
I understand that one constituent of the Indian diaspora may appreciate Modi and his policies and another may be against his policies. People from other provincial states, particularly the state in which Narender Bhai Modi is not popular and governed by another political party may not like him. This may be true for the Indian diaspora in other countries. Is there any connection between the Indian diaspora of first-generation residents and citizens with the political atmosphere in India? It is to be studied. How do second generation and third generation react to the development of politics in India? All are interesting questions to study.
"Shut the border, open the dialogue" by Sapna Samant and Mohan Dutta. This writing is about Covid - 19 and what precautions are required after understanding how India works. Nothing wrong with this article. The intentions of Mohan Dutta and Dr. Sapna Samant are in the interests of the New Zealanders. https://e-tangata.co.nz/.../shut-the-border-open-the.../
In Citizen Mohan J. Dutta writes on "Saffron Mainstreamed Through Political and Media Discourse: To reclaim India is to reclaim both the secular and socialist roots of the nation." Many people in India and in the Indian diaspora want to understand "whether India will be India". For this Mohan Dutta asks a question "What is the idea of India that needs to be defended with vigor?" Dutta wants to know how this idea is contemplated/imagined/discussed among the workers, farmers, Muslims. Nothing wrong is in this discussion. Dutta explains his childhood experience and his vision of India. He concluded his opinion that "To reclaim India is to reclaim both the secular and socialist roots of the nation, written into the constitution." Read https://www.thecitizen.in/.../Saffron-Mainstreamed...
I agree with him on this account also, but unluckily I cannot impose my decision on the people of India. Then the question arises what is the solution. People in democracy decide what they want and who should implement their ideology. India is a federal country and each state acts independently. Communists ruled Bengal from the 1970s onwards and then TMC, while Congress ruled India and other states of India directly or indirectly by joining other political parties. People voted for them and removed them from power. The media supported and opposed Congress and BJP. People are free to like and dislike. As of today Modi supported by BJP and RSS is the Prime Minister. Earlier was Manmohan Singh remotely controlled by Sonia Congress. Indira Gandhi wanted socialism with democracy and so on. Democracy facilitates new ideas and new platforms. Change is the law of nature.
My knowledge about VHP and Bajrang dal is limited. So no comment on this writing, which was quoted by others. https://tfipost.com/2018/06/cia-vhp-bajrang-dal-01/
According to my thinking nothing wrong with Dutta's white page theory. Your suggestions are welcome.
What about publications in New Zealand Herald about Hindutva and in India? In India, many publications are available against Modi governance by Lutiyan media and supporters of earlier politicians. I do not see anything wrong as people are free to express their opinion and influence the voters. Accordingly, voters may select politicians who govern them. People reelected Modi during the 2019 elections with more MPs than in 2014 confirming his policies.
Academics must earn their livelihood and must look with magnifying glasses and criticize and favor the governors in democracy. Criticism is the backbone of improvement and change in a democracy. I appreciate.
Media helps to spread knowledge to people. Masses get some material to read, discuss and pass time. In return, it helps in the change of governance. It is normal human behavior. Nothing is wrong with it. But Media should be careful and avoid emotional language that can induce conflict.

"India is a vast country where people speak numerous languages. Under such circumstances, there is always room for disagreement. However, Hinduism is the common binding agent that keeps Indians from all parts of India together. Hindutva binds a person to live by core principles that value humanity and righteousness over everything else. Hindutva, an integral part of Sanatana Dharma, speaks in a language understood by all who espouse the qualities of Dharma with the sole aim of attaining Moksha. Hence, the terms Hindu and Hindutva are identical and interchangeable"

Karnataka school bans Hijab. Muslim women group opposes and say "Hijab is their right." Management of one school in Karnatka had a dress code. Students will come to school in a particular dress. During elections in some states, some students wanted to come to school in Hijab. Management of the school objected to it. But some girls objected to this decision and came. These girls were supported by local political groups. In reaction to this move, some boys and girls came in saffron clothes.

Both are objectionable. Priyanka Gandhi, a Congress leader, told that women have the right to come to school in any dress, even in a bikini. The matter is in the Karnataka High Court. According to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh college/school management can decide what uniform code should be. Yogi insisted that the nation shall not be governed by Sheriat but by the constitution.
In India, people are accustomed to the tricks played by politicians during election time. Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa elections' results shall guide the future of governance in India - good/goon governance.

The matter is discussed in the Pakistan assembly and by the leaders of OIC (Islamic leaders). (9) Facebook

"After a controversy erupted over remarks made by senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid in his new book 'Sunrise Over Ayodhya: Nationhood in Our Times', the Congress seems to have got into more trouble with Rahul Gandhi saying that Hinduism and Hindutva are different things. Speaking virtually at a party function, he said, "Is there something common between Hindutva and Hinduism? What is the difference between Hinduism and Hindutva? If they are the same, why they have different names -- why then use the name of Hinduism, and not Hindutva." He asked, "Is there something common between what Guru Nanak, Kabir, Gandhiji, and King Ashoka said about the Hindutva ideology? The difference between Hinduism as we know it & Hindutva? "Over the past two decades, Hindu nationalism has been coupled with a form of national-populism that has proved to be potent at the polls―first in Gujarat and then in India at large. One man has been the driver of this change: Narendra Modi. He evolved a highly personalized political style, seducing Indians with the promise of development on the one hand and polarizing the electorate along ethnoreligious lines on the other. Both facets of his particular national populism were communicated directly to voters through numerous and diverse channels of communication that have come to saturate the public space. Drawing on original interviews conducted across India, Christophe Jaffrelot shows how Modi’s government has moved India toward a new form of democracy: an ethnic democracy that equates the majoritarian community with the nation and relegates Muslims and Christians to second-class citizens who are fair targets for vigilante groups. This muscular Hindu nationalism thrives on attacks against secularists, intellectuals, universities, and NGOs. Jaffrelot explains how the political system of India has acquired authoritarian features for other reasons too. Eager to govern not only in New Delhi, but also in the states, the government has centralized power at the expense of federalism and undermined institutions that were part of the checks and balances. Modi’s India is a sobering account of how a once-vibrant democracy has gone wrong". Christophe Jaffrelot. 3 January 2022. "Modi's India: Hindu Nationalism and the Rise of Ethnic Democracy" Westland Publishers.

"Over the past two decades, thanks to Narendra Modi, Hindu nationalism has been coupled with a form of national-populism that has ensured its success at the polls, first in Gujarat and then in India at large. Modi managed to seduce a substantial number of citizens by promising them development and polarizing the electorate along ethno-religious lines. Both facets of this national-populism found expression in a highly personalized political style as Modi related directly to the voters through all kinds of channels of communication in order to saturate the public space.

Drawing on original interviews conducted across India, Christophe Jaffrelot shows how Modi's government has moved India toward a new form of democracy, an ethnic democracy that equates the majoritarian community with the nation and relegates Muslims and Christians to second-class citizens who are harassed by vigilante groups. He discusses how the promotion of Hindu nationalism has resulted in attacks against secularists, intellectuals, universities, and NGOs. Jaffrelot explains how the political system of India has acquired authoritarian features for other reasons, too. Eager to govern not only in New Delhi but also in the states, the government has centralized power at the expense of federalism and undermined institutions that were part of the checks and balances, including India's Supreme Court.

Modi's India is a sobering account of how a once-vibrant democracy can go wrong when a government-backed by popular consent suppresses dissent while growing increasingly intolerant of ethnic and religious minorities." 3 August 2021.

A strain of Hindu nationalism, Hindutva, has grown in global prominence since 2014 under Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s BJP party. Now tensions are rising in the Indian community, both here and internationally, between those supporting Hindutva, and those concerned it promotes racism and Islamophobia.

At the center of the row in New Zealand is Massey University Professor Mohan J Dutta. He has written on how Hindutva thinking is being used to create a sense of pride in the Indian diaspora, yet is also leading to prejudice. Dutta has been the subject of online abuse, and a petition has been circulating, asking that Massey University and Dutta cease such publishing.

Dutta is himself a Hindu and says supporters of Hindutva wrongly conflate it with Hinduism, which is a far broader church.

"This is so infectious that we see the self-styled anti-racist left using the image of the white damsel in distress at the hands of dark pagan savages. This was used more recently in its defence of Audrey Truschke, an American anti-Hindu academic who herself has links to far-right Christian missionaries. Yet that religious fervour is easily morphed into the secular humanist attack, because that secularism is itself the offspring of a once-dominant church and Christian theology.

Now whenever attacked, the Guardian wheel out their ‘coolies’ writers of Indian origin who as with the local collaborators with colonialist rule, know how to toe the line. But behind these puppets, it is the white master that controls the strings. Strangely enough, this anti-Hindu sentiment does not necessarily come from the masses. Indeed it is the white working-class who themselves are looked down upon by the woke writers of the Guardians, as mere ignorant, Brexit-supporting ‘chavs’. These ‘chavs’ are ironically derided as racist by the same newspaper that is infested with Hinduphobia.”

Deep divisions are brewing within Aotearoa’s Indian diaspora, highlighting parallels to the mindsets that preceded the March 15 Christchurch terror attack. Those fighting the rise of a far-right Indian nationalist ideology have spoken out. But they worry no one is listening. Laura Walters reports.

Professor Mohan Dutta seems conflicted.

The polite Massey University academic thanks me, then thanks me again. He wants people to know about the rise of a far-right Indian nationalist movement that’s made its way into the New Zealand diaspora.

"Police are concerned about all forms of extremism in NZ that has the potential to manifest in threatening acts of violence."

In May, Dutta published a two-page white paper about Islamophobic elements in far-right Hindu nationalist ideology, or Hindutva, calling for careful examination of its presence in New Zealand.

Hindutva refers to a political ideology that seeks to establish a monolithic Hindu nation in India, a movement that has gained ground since Narendra Modi's nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in 2014.

Populism Worldwide

"There has been an increase in populist parties and sentiments in North AmericaEurope, and Latin America over the last six years.

Populism can be explained using multiple different approaches. Some scholars argue that ideologically, populist governments differentiate between “the people” from “the elite”. This approach to populism also emphasizes that populism is usually paired with another ideology that defines “the people.” An example of an ideology often paired with right-wing populism is nativism, the belief in exclusionary policies protecting individuals born in a country over foreign-born people.

While populist effects are complex, they can be negative. For example, appealing only to the majority can have detrimental consequences on minority rights. This becomes even more dangerous when appeals to the majority limit “the people” to an ethnic or racial majority." With far right groups on the rise, we should keep an eye on populism this federal election (theconversation.com)

If you see the attempts of the government over the past year – the May 2020 economic stimulus package, the farmer bills, labour law reforms, October 2020 announcements and this month’s stimulus package – there is definitely an intention to work towards a stronger economy. However, almost every week, a hard right agenda item comes and dominates headlines. This takes attention away from real issues, gets India horrible international press, makes businesses nervous and most of all – damages the legacy of the government.

Like the hard left, the hard right exists and manages to make a lot of noise. However, at some point, both the hard left and hard right risk damaging governance. Any party in power has the responsibility to check its extreme elements, while somehow not upsetting its base. BJP needs to do it, as it risks spoiling its legacy despite all the good work.

"Mohammad was still reeling from the shock when, just months after the Christchurch shootings, he started experiencing a form of prejudice he didn't think existed in Aotearoa. Indian immigrants, fuelled by recent political developments in their home country, started targeting Muslims with anti-Islamic posts in New Zealand-based Facebook groups".

"I've seen these posts. They're not just offensive, but also disturbingly close to home, because these Islamophobes live in New Zealand. And in a small society like ours, it's only too easy to find and harass those who speak out - which is why this piece is written by a migrant Muslim under a pen name, and Mohammad's name has been changed.

The surge in anti-Islam sentiment started thousands of kilometres away from New Zealand, with the introduction in India of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and a proposed National Register for Citizens (NRC).

The act grants Indian citizenship to religious minorities from neighbouring countries - except Muslims

The proposed national register aims to document all legal citizens of India so those in the country unlawfully can be deported. For most of those whose homes were destroyed in incidents like the Gujarat riots, producing these documents is impossible: one of them is Mohammad's sister, a woman who was born in India and has spent her entire life there.

There have been protests around the world, including New Zealand, against the CAA and NRC for their discrimination against Muslims. In New Zealand this seems to have incensed Kiwi Indian supporters of the hard right BJP-led government that introduced the law".

Arif Mohmad Khan speaks about Hindu culture in India. Khan is known to stand up for equal rights. He quotes Rabinder Nath Tagore, Sarvpalli Radhakrishnan. Nehru was critical of secularism. His talk is in Hindi but worth listening to by Indians. Spiritual democracy is in the blood of Indians. Secularism was defined after democracy in the west. Secularism in India is before thousand years. Indian democracy by nature accepts many cultures. एकम सम विप्रा बहुधा (विविधता )विदन्ति" Truth is one. It can have many opinions. Nehru said that this is Indian way of life. The Indian way of life accepts all cultures. Indians believe in rebirth and Karma Theory.
Blasphemy does not have any word in Sanskrit Vedic language. There is no Kafir word in the Hindu religion.
In Hindu Sanskriti, there is no "other". See all with the same rules.
India is known for centuries for knowledge.
"यूनानो मिस्र ओ रुमा, सब मिट गए जहाँ से /
बाकी मगर है अब तक नामो निशां हमारा//
कुछ बात है की हस्ती मिटती नहीं हमारी /
सदियों रहा है दुश्मन दौरे जमां हमारा //" (He explains about the culture of Hindustan and says that India was known for her Knowledge (10:33). Literature of 6th and 7th century writes about this.
"अहम् ब्रह्मास्मि " (16:47). I am atman (आत्मां) not the body. And the same atman lives in you. So this was the knowledge. India was always the source of knowledge and not the architecture of Rome or the comforts of Iran. It is universalism. Values that are eternal everlasting is Sanatani culture. Indians kept these words alive till today.
India was always secular of Indian religious style (19:12). The secularism of France is different from than secularism definition of America. Secularism is deeply engraved in Sanathan Dharma. Gandhi and Sarv Palli Radha Krishnan were spiritual. India cannot exist with imported ideas. It is not actual. Indian political democracy was not there but it was spiritual democracy (23:17). Indian culture for many centuries respect and accepts diversity एकम सद (सत), विप्रा बहुधा विदन्ति (25:12 to 26:14). [Trith is one, each intellectual explains differently].
Citizen Amendment Act: Why is there so much negativity on CAA (36:34 onwards)? Khan explains and blames leadership before 1947 and after 1947. Read the report of the Aurat organization of Pakistan.

13 December 2018

"While liberals and leftists quickly united against the rise of the far-right, they chose to largely ignore the rise of Hindu nationalism in the world’s largest secular democracy. Especially after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, the necessity of expanding the anti-fascist praxis to include all forms of racism, from anti-Semitism to Islamophobia, was emphasized by many. However, the opposition to Hindu nationalism has not yet been made part of the broader movement, despite the well-documented suffering of India’s minorities under BJP’s rule".

"Instead, the idea that India is a “Hindu nation” is being accepted as a given by the majority of liberals. The fact that India’s constitution defines the state as “secular” is being ignored, and Hindu nationalism is being presented as a benevolent movement despite ample evidence to the contrary".
