Macaulay begins by spitting acid on India’s monumental intellectual heritage. He declares Sanskrit learning to be nothing more than “all the uses of cusa-grass” and “all the mysteries of absorption into the Deity,” and likens Indian sacred literature to Egyptian fables about “cats and onions.” These are not the words of someone wishing India well - they are the words of someone clearing the ground for forcible demolition. His strategy is simple - to demean and trivialize Hindu civilization so thoroughly that its erasure feels like a cleansing.
He goes on to announce nonchalantly that “a single shelf of a good European library is worth the whole native literature of India...” and claims that all Indian historical knowledge fits inside “the most paltry abridgments used at preparatory schools in England.” This is no analysis - but pure bigotry disguised as intellectual judgment. To Macaulay, the grand Hindu epics, philosophies, scientific treatises, medical texts, and sophisticated astronomical science all deserved less respect than the dirty scraps swept off a British schoolroom floor.
After scorning India’s millennia-old, towering civilizational knowledge as worthless, he shifts from contempt to outright ridicule with a vengeance that reveals his intense hostility. He snarls that Indian science consists of “medical doctrines which would disgrace an English farrier,” (A farrier is a horse-shoer), astronomy, which would move laughter in girls at an English boarding school - history, abounding with kings thirty feet high, & reigns thirty thousand years long - and geography, made up of seas of treacle and seas of butter.”
He lambasts Indian learning as “false History, false Astronomy, false Medicine,” even though India pioneered cataract surgery, rhinoplasty, fracture repair, zero, decimals, algebra, the basis of calculus, trigonometry, precise astronomical calculations, and advanced geography centuries before Europe ever had a clue. He blatantly mocks what he can't read, because he openly admits that he doesn't even know a single word of Sanskrit or Arabic. But he still has the audacity to belittle what he can't even understand, and shamelessly condemns Sanskrit as a "language barren of useful knowledge ...fruitful of monstrous superstitions." because he KNOWS that an India empowered by its ancient knowledge threatens to decimate the fake British delusion of superiority.
And then he unveils the ultimate goal without a single shred of shame - a project to manufacture “a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect.”
He openly wants to impose a blatantly racist blueprint for cultural replacement and erasure. And even has the gall to announce the replacement Britain intends to install - well-trained, mentally enslaved subject-sheep, who have been created through his English education project. If this sounds like the good intentions of a man who “wished Indians well,” then the word well has never been more violently misused!
Macaulay was no simple villain. He sneered with contempt at the very core essence of Hindu identity. A man who jeered that Hindu learning was nothing but instructions on “how they are to purify themselves after touching an ass, or what text of the Vedas they are to repeat to expiate the crime of killing a goat,” and who condemned an entire grand civilization’s knowledge as “false History, false Astronomy, false Medicine… in company with a false religion” !
These are no good wishes - they are the predatory battle cries of a colonial bigot determined to humiliate a culture with missionary fanaticism before dismantling it. To him India was only fit to survive after its Hindu scriptures, sciences, and spiritual heritage had been dragged through the mud, stripped of all power and thrown out into the garbage heap as unworthy of existence.
Either you haven't read a single line he wrote or you have a much more sinister agenda in glorifying this arrogant racist despot. His contempt for Indian civilization is so vicious, so openly dehumanizing, that even two centuries later the words still cut like a blade - cold, deliberate, and driven straight at India’s throat.

They were conquering, they were subjugating. And they were in a country where people never understood this.
Only now are the people beginning to understand that there has been a great vandalising of India. Because of the nature of the conquest and the nature of Hindu society such understanding had eluded Indians before.
What is happening in India is a highly creative process. Indian intellectuals, who want to be secure in their liberal beliefs, may not understand what is going on....
But every other Indian knows precisely what is happening: deep down he knows that a larger response is emerging even if at times this response appears in his eyes to be threatening.
I don't see the Hindu reaction purely in terms of one fundamentalism pitted against another.
