" To be seventy-five may sound old, but in the family of nations, it counts as teenage years. India, which celebrates its 75th year of independence on August 15th, is an indisputably ancient land, yet still a gangly youth of a democracy. With more energy than discipline, it oscillates between grace and awkwardness, timidity and brashness. Its 1.4bn people are stumbling into 2022 with a sense of unease, not unlike the mix of fear and impatience that come with rushing headlong into adulthood.
There are good reasons for their anxiety. The past few years have been hard, and not just because of covid-19, whose Delta variant ripped across the land like a typhoon in spring 2021. More Indians—between 3m and 4m—died from it than citizens of any other country. Patchy record-keeping, over-strict criteria for attributing causes of death, and politicians underplaying the crisis mean the true toll may never be known."
How can people and politicians understand the ground realities in a democracy? Some times opinions of editors and foreign media mismatch with the ground realities. One of the reasons is the language. The second reason is the source of information of opinion writers. Other reasons are glasses that editors/journalists wear or are compelled to wear. Selfishness, rules of personal and national security, freedom of speech, human rights, duties, economics, elites contradict each other in a democracy. No one wants to talk the truth. Legislatures, executives, judiciary, media, and intelligence all are tools of governance. These tools employ human beings.
I agree with James Madison that if men were angels, no government would be necessary. But administration which includes discussion, propaganda, persuasion, legislation, threats, bribes, must provide peace, happiness, and prosperity to humanity.
Younger generations must think beyond the selfish interests of race, nation, and identities. Next-generation must think for humanity and the world as one planet. Elites must guide the next generation to survive and grow sustainably.
