Myanmar

Myanmar / Burma

AA was formed in April 2009 in Laiza, a town in #Kachin state. It seeks to establish an autonomous region in #Rakhine state, #Myanmar, with significant autonomy, akin to that governed by the United Wa State Army (UWSA).
AA was initially trained under Kachin Independence Army (KIA). It later shifted towards UWSA which was far more powerful. After gaining battle experience from its operations in the Shan & Kachin states, AA started shifting focus to Rakhine state by 2012.
CHINA’S BACKING TO AA Around 90% of AA’s financial resources come from #China. Additionally, CCP provides AA with ammo, weapons & uniforms. Atleast three Chinese-made 107mm surface-to-surface rockets were reportedly fired by AA rebels during the June 2019 Sittwe vessel raid.
UWSA & CHINA ARE CLOSE ALLIES According to reports, #UWSA has established factories in its territory that produce Chinese weapons, making it the most notable recipient of Chinese arms supplies. #Beijing uses UWSA as head of the Federal Political Negotiation & Consultative 5/12
Committee (FPNCC), a coalition of 7 EAOs to exert pressure on Arakan Army in order to protect its interests. Shops, hotels and restaurants in #Panghsang, the unofficial capital of Myanmar’s NE area controlled by UWSA, display signs in 3 languages: Wa, Chinese & Bamar. 6/12
Keeping links with Arakan Army helps #Beijing to shield its infrastructure projects from harm. Read Swedish Journalist Bertil Linter's "Carrot & Stick Policy" to understand #China in #Myanmar better. LINK: asiatimes.com/2017/02/china- 11/12
Tatmadaw cannot control the whole territory on its own. #Beijing requires links with both the EAOs and the government to safeguard its economic and strategic interests in #Myanmar. The real game is to secure gas pipeline from Kunming to #BayofBengal. 12/12
